Sheet Music for 5 String Violin
A five-string violin is a truly exciting instrument, but there is very little written repertoire for it. That’s why part of the
5 String Theory mission is to create as much music as possible specifically for violins with five strings. From exercises to original pieces and arrangements, you will find here a growing library of music written for 5 string violin.
In this book, you’ll find five exercises for the five-string violin, adapted from selected studies by Schradieck, Kreutzer, and Rode. These exercises are designed to help you transition smoothly from a four-string to a five-string violin. Keep up the good practice!
Capricio nr.1 is based on arpeggio movement across all five strings. At the beginning, it can be tricky to make your brain think in “five strings”. Therefore the goal of this Capriccio is to encourage (or rather, to force) the player to do so in almost every bar.
Capriccio No. 2 for five-string violin leans toward the virtuoso side. It features numerous double stops, five positions, and includes some tricky yet thoughtfully crafted jumps. It is quite a learning curve, but trust me - it’ll be incredibly satisfying to play in the end!
This caprice for a five-string violin explores a variety of melodies, textures, and chords. It aims to be not just a fun exercise but a fully realized solo composition - technically adventurous and emotionally engaging. It sounds particularly beautiful in a room with rich natural reverb.
